Michael Ogden, Head Brewer
Michael was born in New Orleans on Friday the 13th and spent most of his childhood running the streets of the city. His family moved to the Northshore in the early 80s, but the call of Rock n Roll was strong, and he found his way back to the big city by the end of the decade and spent the next ten years playing drums in local Acid Rock/Hardcore bands.
Michael returned to the Northshore and started at Abita Beer in 1996. By 2002, he worked his way up from warehouse & bottling, to keg washer (240 Hoff-Stevens style a day!) was promoted to Brewer, then to Head Brewer. As Head Brewer he was responsible for training all brewers in brewing duties, working cellar, and production, as well as acting as the main tour guide and various events. At Abita, Michael won many Employee of the Month awards and was named their first ever Employee of the Year.
He left the industry for a number of years to follow other pursuits and to raise a family, and even spent several years driving 18-wheelers. Michael returned to brewing in 2012 at Covington Brewhouse. His duties there included a bit of everything: brewing, cellar, keg washing, packaging and bottling. Michael was dubbed “The Beer Ambassador” giving tours and representing the brewery at special events.
In 2016, he landed back in New Orleans again, back where he belongs! He still plays drums in musical projects from time to time, but making beer is the only “job” he has ever loved because to him it’s not a job but a labor of love. He likes the idea of working together as a group to produce something that connects people through an experience. Making beer & playing music brings people from different backgrounds together, giving this thing we call life a means of celebration. For Michael, that is a noble pursuit and as a native of New Orleans, it’s his civic duty!
